It is early yet but the news of Ukraine launching a second incursion into Russia, this time in Belgorod Oblast, is both striking and bold on so many levels. Classic Syrskyi … always on the move … in the enemy’s rear and on their wings.
It has all the makings of the earlier Ukrainian blitz into Kursk .. a strong spearhead followed by an even bigger mobile force to push forward rapidly. And once again the Russians didn’t see it coming.
I doubt that the regional capital of Belgorod, a city of about 300,000 people, is the focus of this movement by Ukraine. I believe this is Syrskyi moving to encircle the remnants of the Russian force still in Kharkiv(Vovchansk, Hylboke, etc) from Russia’s ill-fated push into Kharkiv Oblast. Taking those border crossings in nearby Belgorod Oblast(Nekhoteevka, Shebekino, etc) basically cuts off those Russians, now largely degraded, and their GLOCs into Kharkiv.
This movement also likely pinches on the ability of the still assembling Russian force in Belgorod which was redeployed from the Ukraine front to easily get to the Ukrainians in Kursk Oblast. Chess moves?
Any Russians caught up in the encirclement will also go a long way into once again topping off Ukraine’s prisoner “Exchange Fund”, as President Zelenskyi euphemistically calls the number of Russian soldiers who have surrendered to Ukraine.
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”… as coined by Drew “Bundini” Brown(the late great Muhammad Ali's corner man). It is now also classic Syrskyi.
