Eight years ago at about this time, I was penning a diary entitled Top Comments: Final Meals Edition. It was the week before we took K1 to her first semester at college, when everything was going to change. And change it did, with ups, downs, highs, lows, and everything that you expect when, well, everything changes! K1 now has a wonderful partner, lives a few miles from us, and is working in her chosen career.
This week is the last full week that K2 will be living full-time in our house. Next Saturday Aug 17th he reports two weeks early to his college just outside NYC because he’ll be on their Men’s NCAA Div 3 Soccer Team and they need the preseason time! Unlike our previous “take the kid to college” experience however, we will not be driving him there. Mr. Brillig has a work meeting that (1) allows a +1 to attend, and (2) requires we leave on Thursday the 15th. So his older sister and her partner are taking him down, with enough stuff to get him through that first couple of weeks. The three of them will get a fun road trip, one they’ve never gotten to do before. Then Mr. Brillig and I will go down later this month at the ‘regular’ dropoff time, to bring everything K2 realizes he now wants :-) and to attend the parent orientation.
About that work event… Mr. Brillig’s new employer is 100% remote work and has been since before the pandemic. Once a year, there’s an in-person all-hands meeting that just employees attend. The other in-person meeting is in a different spot each year, and all employees can bring a +1. This year it’s in Jackson, WY. There will be one themed dinner (“Black Tie Cowboy”) and one casual one, and on Saturday we got to choose an Excursion, so Mr. Brillig and I will be horseback riding in the Tetons. Oh, and there is one half-day all-hands meeting. We’re then staying two extra days and will do some exploring in the town of Jackson as well as take a trip into the National Park. When we return, we’ll be empty nesters!
Next week is going to be very, very busy and I want as much time as possible to spend relaxing with my son packing. So I’m letting you know now I will not be writing on August 12th or 19th. I’ll be back on the 26th!
