Although the economy remains the No. 1 issue for voters, a growing share of voters in swing states now say abortion is central to their decision this fall, according to New York Times/Siena College polls earlier this month.
This represents an increase since May, when President Joe Biden was still the Democratic presidential nominee. And by a wide margin, more say they trust Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump to handle abortion.

If you’re unfamiliar with “The Coffee Klatch” — a new weekly podcast with former Clinton Secretary of Labor Robert Reich and Heather Lofthouse, President of Inequality Media Civic Action in California — subscribe to it. You’ll enjoy their weekly recap of political events.
In this week’s edition, they discuss the Harris-Walz interview on CNN and how they both projected and “exuded confidence”; Trump coming “unhinged” in more ways than one in recent days; the disastrous and shameful stunt by Trump using Arlington National Cemetery and fallen soldiers as a political prop; the popularity of the Harris-Walz ticket on TikTok and ramifications for young voters; the upcoming Harris-Trump Debate on September 10th and implications of a muted vs unmuted microphone; and anti-trust developments aimed at leveling the playing field with better results for the working classes.
They do all this with humor, a great sense of history, and a distinct progressive bent.

What the GOP Intends to Do
Conduct Unbecoming
An excellent article in The Atlantic expounds on what can only be characterized as Trump’s disgraceful behavior at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.
For him, nothing is sacred.
Long ago, he abandoned any sense of decency and civilized behavior and, in the process, neglected and destroyed norms that have set the standard for expected behavior from senior public officials over the centuries — particularly American Presidents.
There are certain things in public life that you don’t do. There are certain places and institutions you never desecrate.
This is a sorry excuse for a human without any sense of national tradition and etiquette. He has demonstrated over and over again that he doesn’t deserve ever to step foot in the White House again.
It is time for the Democratic Party to come together to defeat this vulgar man decisively, consign him to the ash heap of history, let the Republican Party sort itself out in the ensuing mess, and move on.
Enough.
Michael Powell: “For Trump, defiling what is sacred in our civic culture borders on a pastime. Peacefully transferring power to the next president, treating political adversaries with at least rudimentary grace, honoring those soldiers wounded and disfigured in service of our country—Trump long ago walked roughshod over all these norms. Before he tried to overturn a national election, he mocked his opponents in the crudest terms and demeaned dead soldiers as ‘suckers.'”
“But the former president outdid himself this week, when he attended a wreath-laying ceremony honoring 13 American soldiers killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul during the final havoc-marked hours of the American withdrawal. Trump laid three wreaths and put hand over heart; that is a time-honored privilege of presidents. Trump, as is his wont, went further. He walked to a burial site in Section 60 and posed with the family of a fallen soldier, grinning broadly and giving a thumbs-up for his campaign photographer and videographer.”
