Early morning, July 8, 2024, a Russian missile strike hits Kyiv. As a clearly distraught woman looked upon the still smoldering wreckage of Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, Ukraine’s largest children’s medical facility, with tears streaming down her face, she asked her country to do to the Russians what they have visited upon the people of Ukraine … “make them feel it on their own skin”. An indelible moment forever etched on my mind and soul.
And so it is that her country is slowly but increasingly taking the war into Russia itself and systematically making the Russians feel the war on their own skin. Ukraine’s airborne drone assaults on Russian military installations may not have been enough to grab the attention of the everyday people in the metropolitan precincts of Moscow where life and the quotidian concerns of the residents have generally flowed unvexed by the vicissitudes of war. Not anymore. Those care free days may now be over. Russians may soon learn to pay attention to air raid warning sirens just like Ukrainians have done since February 22, 2022.
Ukraine is seemingly now determined to bring the war to the seat of Russian political power … Moscow itself. Nothing like waking up to the loudest Boooom! And having your electrical power supply suddenly go off. All about you is dark except for the intense bright light of the intermittent huge explosions, fireballs and towering infernos in the distance. Welcome to Putin’s SPECIAL MILITARY OPERATION, Muscovites.
And Winter is coming.
Early today, Ukraine launched massive and sustained drone attacks targeting power and refinery plants in Moscow and neighboring Tver Oblast. The reports are still coming in as I write:
