ABC's transcript of the 240910 Harris-Trump debate
DAVID MUIR: Let me continue on immigration. It was what you wanted to talk about earlier. So let's get back to your deportation proposal that the vice president has reacted to as well. President Trump, you called this the largest domestic deportation operation in the history of our country. You say you would use the National Guard. You say if things get out of control you'd have no problem using the U.S. military.
FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: With local police.
DAVID MUIR: You also said you would use local police. How would you deport 11 million undocumented immigrants? I know you believe that number is much higher. Take us through this. What does this look like? Will authorities be going door to door in this country?
FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Yeah.
(bold added by me)
This happened right on the heels of Trump running wild about Haitian immigrants eating household pets, so it is understandable that we were all still reeling from that madness when this exchange went by.
It could be said that Trump was acknowledging the question and not answering it, per se. However, he took no issue with Muir’s questioning of authorities going door to door.
Naturally, Trump provided no details to actually answer Muir’s question, but he assented to Muir that, yeah, police will be going door to door.
Take a quick second and look again at the photo at the top of the diary.
That’s just the start of what this would look like. Groups of police walking around in neighborhoods. People being suspected of being here illegally would be zip-tie restrained and carried out to paddy wagons.
There are so many questions here that I know that I can’t begin to cover them.
What happens when a legal migrant is apprehended?
What are the 4th Amendment ramifications of going door to door?
What if illegal activity is found during these visits?
What happens when someone armed “stands their ground”?
Since the Bush era, our police have become more and more militarized. They now have armored personnel carriers and automatic weapons. It’s impossible to think that those weapons wouldn’t be used.
Muir tried to get Trump to explain this plan, and he didn’t. But by God, he should certainly have to. There’s no way to explain this with it being anything less than a pure police state.
Apprehension of suspects is just the tip of this insane iceberg. I know everyone will be focused on cats and dogs for lunch, and Taylor Swift’s endorsement. Seriously though, Trump must be pressed for his plan on this deportation. Citizens and members of law enforcement will end up killed.
Trump has offered 2 basic plans for his next term: 20% tariffs and deportation. Tariffs are a stupid idea. Deportation is a deadly one.
(edit: Top of the Rec List! Thanks Y’all! Ok, I’ve been around here for awhile, since there ain’t no Rec List no more. But hopefully this will madness will get the attention it deserves.)
