For those who are bewildered by the New York Times pro-Trump and Republican news coverage, while their editorials are moderately liberal, one need look no further than the NYT’s bottom line. According to Macrotrend, it is valued at 9 billion dollars in net worth. Its last fiscal year revenue was 2.49 billion dollars. Tax cuts and Republican hyper-capitalism benefit the bottom line of the newspaper, and its putting its thumb on the scale for Trump evidences that, in the tone, the placement and the frequency of Trump articles it is irrepressibly biased.
A Daily Kos community writer drew attention to the fact that on September 1, the NYT had 7 articles on Trump and none on Harris.
Let’s take a deeper dive on why the NYT may lean Republican in its domestic news coverage. According to the Economic Studies Group, “Finance has long been considered a key sector in the New York City economy. The sector generates about 30 percent of the earnings of workers throughout the city, and thus developments in the sector are critically important for the performance of the overall city economy.” Some speculate figures reach as high as 35%.
The NYT knows that the finance sector is a significant part of its audience, and it doesn’t want to offend the Wall Street barons with forthright news coverage of a deranged, mentally ill GOP candidate for president.
The New York Times stock most recently traded at nearly $60 per share. Follow the money.
The NYT financially wants to benefit along with the New York financial sector by putting its thumb on the scale for Republicans, read Trump, benefitting the corporations and the wealthy through economic policies.
I wrote a column a couple of days ago about how the NYT ran two, not just one, columns that portrayed Trump in a good light on a visit to a Moms for Liberty conference in DC. The preview article was entitled, “Conservative Moms, Charmed by Trump, Would Rather Avoid His Misogyny.” In what could only be called journalistic malpractice, in neither of the puff pieces did the articles note that there were only 600 members in attendance. You had to find this paltry figure in USA Today.
On September 1, the NYT ran an article on its front page, "Trump Campaign Uses Statements From Gold Star Families to Attack Harris,” in which it primarily laid out the despicable Trump campaign perspective on the incident. It did not mention Trump’s role in allowing 5,000 Taliban to join forces to overthrow the Afghan government. Much of the NYT article could have been written from a “no apology” Trump campaign news release or series of campaign tweets.
Of course, when Hillary Clinton ran in 2016, the New York Times couldn’t stop running articles about her emails, which in and of itself may have lost her the electoral election, even though she won the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes.
It’s beyond clear that the New York Times editors are assigning stories that put the Republicans, and particularly Trump, in the best possible light. For instance, did the NYT run a front page article about Trump’s harrowing statement the he has a right to interfere in the results of the upcoming presidential election? Nope
Finally, take another look at the photo at the top of this commentary. It is worth noting that the NYT had a three column banner headline at the top of a 2019 front page that said, “Trump Urges Unity Over Racism,” after the El Paso massacre in 2019 that Trump largely incited through stochastic terrorism.
If you want to know why the NYT puffs up the very sick man Donald Trump, it’s easy, follow the money.
