I know. Believe me, I know. We all want this to be over, already. We all want Harris and Walz declared the winners, with a landslide victory that makes it impossible for MAGA to appeal to the courts (of law or opinion, either one). We all want Harris inaugurated as the first Black woman President. We all want Trump to go to prison and never come back out.
But we have a short time where we still must play the long game. That means deferring quick wins and small victories, in the interest of longer-lasting wins and bigger victories later. And it’s hard! I won’t pretend it’s not.
For example: some folks are really frustrated that Justice Merchan has, once again, delayed Trump’s sentencing until November 26th. They see this as cowardice. And I get it. I understand why.
But this development makes it impossible for Trump to raise the issue of judicial election interference (at least for this trial). That means one less weapon in his arsenal to try avoiding justice.
It also means that when he loses (and he will), he can be sentenced and jailed pretty much immediately. Which I devoutly hope for; I’m not gonna lie.
There will be many other bumps like this in the next 60 days, which we — understandably! — will want resolved immediately. But we really need to have patience, trust the process, and work like hell to get voters registered and to the polls, donate to our candidates, increase down-ballot voter turnout, and make sure we take the battleground states. We have to keep our eyes on the prize.
We have 60 days left to play the long game.
We’ll sleep when it’s over.
