Family killed in landslide as Yagi hits Vietnam
Four members of the same family have died in a landslide triggered by super typhoon Yagi after the powerful storm ripped through Vietnam.
State media said the tragedy struck in the mountainous Hoa Binh province of northern Vietnam at around midnight local time (Saturday 18:00 BST).
A 51-year-old man was able to escape but his wife, daughter and two grandchildren were buried when the hillside collapsed onto their house. Their bodies were recovered later, AFP news agency reported.
Yagi, Asia's most powerful typhoon this year, has killed at least 14 and injured 176 others, according to Vietnamese state media. It has now been downgraded to a tropical depression.
State media said four people died in the northern Quang Ninh province, with another killed in Hai Duong, near Hanoi.
Search and rescue found 27 people drifting at sea after a dozen fishermen were reported as missing. Some 41 fishing boats are among vessels sunk or adrift in the wake of the storm.Duong The Hung, a restaurant owner in Ha Long Bay, a Unesco world Heritage site, said his business's signs had all fallen off.
We have taken two trips to Vietnam. Ha Long Bay is one of the most beautiful places ever. Very sad for Vietnam.

What happened to predictions of a ‘historic’ hurricane season?
Now, the Atlantic is making history for an unexpected and confounding distinction: It’s the longest stretch in more than half a century without a single late-summer cyclone, a time of year when several often churn at once. Though two months of storm risks still lie ahead, the astonishing lull has meteorologists wrestling with confusion and criticism, while striving to protect delicate public trust.
Many who warned the public to prepare for a dangerous summer and fall are now caught in the awkward position of almost rooting for storms, lest they end up eating crow — and losing the public’s confidence — when their predictions fall flat come November.
The trend could be a preview of future decades, in which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted climate change could make hurricanes less frequent, while encouraging a higher proportion of them to become monster storms.

Southern California's Line Fire forces thousands to evacuate
More than 10,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders due to a fast-spreading, uncontrolled wildfire in southern California.
The Line Fire also threatens thousands of homes, businesses and other buildings in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles.
The wildfire, which started on Thursday, spread rapidly overnight on Saturday, causing California Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency.
The blaze on the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest has grown to roughly 17,459 acres (27 sq miles) as of Sunday afternoon and was 0% contained.
It is currently the fifth-largest active wildfire in California, after quadrupling in size on Saturday.
On Sunday morning, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department issued evacuation orders for residents of Running Springs and Arrowbear Lake.
That area alone has a total population of more than 6,000 people, according to CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

Elon Musk on pace to become world’s first trillionaire by 2027, report says
(Trillion is one million million)
Elon Musk is on pace to become the world’s first trillionaire by 2027, according to a new report from a group that tracks wealth.
Informa Connect Academy’s finding about the boss of electric carmaker Tesla, private rocket company SpaceX and social media platform X (formerly Twitter) stems from the fact that Musk’s wealth has been growing at an average annual rate of 110%. He was also the world’s richest person, with $251bn, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as the academy’s 2024 Trillion Dollar Club report began circulating Friday.
The academy’s analysis suggested business conglomerate founder Gautam Adani of India would become the second to achieve trillionaire status. That would reportedly happen in 2028 if his annual growth rate remains at 123%.

A salmonella outbreak linked to recalled eggs sickens people in 9 states
A salmonella outbreak linked to recalled eggs has sickened 65 people in nine states, U.S. health officials said.
As of Friday, 24 people had been hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No deaths were reported.
The recalled eggs came from Milo’s Poultry Farms and were distributed to Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan, the CDC said.
Eggs labeled “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market” are subject to the recall, which was announced on Friday, because they may be contaminated with salmonella, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, the Food and Drug Administration said.

Russia takes Ukrainian town in advance on Pokrovsk
MOSCOW, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Russia said on Sunday its forces had taken full control of a town in eastern Ukraine as Moscow's forces advance on the strategically important city of Pokrovsk and seek to pierce the Ukrainian defensive front lines.
Russian forces, which control about a fifth of Ukraine since
invading in February 2022, are advancing in eastern Ukraine in an attempt to take the whole of the Donbas, which is about half the size of the U.S. state of Ohio.
Russia's defence ministry said its forces had taken the town of Novohrodivka, which lies 12 km (7 miles) from Pokrovsk, an important rail and road hub for Ukrainian forces in the area. The town had a population of 14,000 before the war.
Yuri Podolyaka, an influential Ukrainian-born, pro-Russian military blogger, published maps showing Russian forces attacking beyond Novohrodivka in at least two places less than 7 km (4 miles) from Pokrovsk.

At least 48 killed in Nigerian fuel truck explosion
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Sept 8 (Reuters) - At least 48 people were killed on Sunday in a fuel tanker truck explosion following a collision with another vehicle in north-central Nigeria, the state's disaster management agency said.
The State Emergency Management Agency in north-central Niger state said the fuel truck collided with a truck carrying travellers and cattle. Several other vehicles were also caught up in the accident, it said.
The agency's spokesperson Hussaini Ibrahim put the death toll at 48 and officials were still trying to clear the scene of the incident. Nigeria's state-owned firm NNPC Ltd last week hiked the price of gasoline by at least 39%, the second major increase in more than a year but shortages have continued, forcing motorists to queue for hours in the country's major cities and towns.

Newly released FBI records detail Iranian assassination plots for Trump, Biden and Haley
FBI records released by Sen. Chuck Grassley’s office detail Iranian-backed assassination plots against Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Nikki Haley.
Grassley’s office reportedly obtained the documents from law enforcement whistleblowers. These plots were revenge for the assassination of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in January 2020, according to the reports. Donald Trump was president at the time and gave the green light for the strike.
The FBI record release reignited questions surrounding the assassination attempt of Donald Trump at his campaign rally in July.
The day before Trump took the stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, a 46-year-old Pakistani man with ties to Iran, Asif Merchant, was arrested and charged with murder for hire and allegedly attempting to kill a U.S. politician or official on U.S. soil. The DOJ says the plan was foiled before it could play out.
Iran is also ramping up cyber-meddling efforts attempting to influence the presidential election. Last month more was revealed about hacking efforts to get into both the Donald Trump and Kamala Harris campaigns.

Biden decision to kill Nippon Steel deal could spark legal challenge
A decision by President Joe Biden to kill Nippon Steel’s planned acquisition of U.S. Steel could ignite a legal fight over a corporate takeover that has become an election-year drama and threatens to complicate relations with one of the United States’ closest allies.
Both companies say privately that the Biden administration has politicized the interagency process that reviews foreign companies’ purchases of U.S. assets to gain the United Steelworkers union’s backing for Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election.
The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) recently informed both companies that it believes the deal would harm U.S. national security. Both Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel hotly contest that finding and have suggested a willingness to fight an eventual presidential verdict.
