There were a lot of predictions flying since Trump won the 2024 election. One of them being that Jack Smith’s report wouldn’t see the light of day. That Garland himself wouldn’t allow it to be public. And there was a diary I recommended saying Biden should do it himself. Which I agreed with because of all of Trump’s enemies, that includes Garland and Smith and Biden, Biden has the most protection and the most immunity moving forward.
That changed today. Per NBC:
Special Counsel Jack Smith has turned over to Attorney General Merrick Garland the completed final report on his two investigations that resulted in felony criminal charges against President-elect Donald Trump, part of which Garland intends to make public, the Justice Department said in a filing Wednesday.
But the Justice Department said Wednesday there was "neither any need nor legal basis for an injunction" on the release of the report because Garland intends only to release volume one of the report — which focuses on Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election — to Congress "in furtherance of the public interest in informing a co-equal branch and the public regarding this significant matter." Garland will not, however, publicly release volume two of the report as long as the cases against Trump's codefendants Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira remain pending.
Justice Department attorneys asked the federal appeals court to "make clear that there is no impediment to the Attorney General allowing for limited congressional review" of the volume of the report on Trump's classified documents case, along with the public release of the volume on Trump's election interference case.
So hopefully part one coming soon and part 2 to come when the two pending cases get segmented or completed. Thoughts?
