The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on follow.

I was surprised there was ruckus at the Woodpecker Palace. When I set up the tripod and camera (to explore the disturbance) I found a wild sight. Squirrels had invaded the Palace.
Red-headed Woodpeckers are beginning to filter back into my neighborhood after taking their young to the swamps for hunting lessons. But, the birds have taken little notice of the furred invaders.
Red-head fledgling from August
The Red-heads are collecting seeds and nuts for winter stores and not paying attention to breeding sites (presently). Red-heads establish alternate nesting sites and will use them as families expand in numbers. The “second home” is just as good as the main abode.
However, the squirrels had a fruitful summer and were able to produce another litter. I witnessed the scampering of pups exploring outside for the first time.

Mom took notice and hurried back to calm the rowdy children. Here was her short time with them before returning to the nearby woods.

The parents have encouraged the pups to explore beyond the power pole (location of the Palace). An adult still guards the perimeter if pups are still inside.

I expect the family will be leaving the Palace soon and other interested parties might explore the accommodations. Such a prime location always attracts tenants, whomever it may be.
Oct. 15th update
The adult in charge (not sure which parent) is trying to move the pups to the woods. I have this short video of an attempt.

I’d love to read about the interesting home locations and occupants. I will be at work during the morning but will return to respond to all comments submitted. May the day be kind to you until then.
