Given the huge size, big costs and roster of billionaire donors for Trump’s new ballroom addition, this nugget in the Washington Post caught my eye:
There has been little public information released about the layout or design of the addition, which would be the largest ever, with a planned size almost double the footprint of the 55,000-square-foot main section of the White House. . . .
The East Wing will be replaced by the ballroom, offices for the first lady and her staff, and new “guest suites” for the “President’s White House Guests,” according to a project description on the résumé of lead architect James McCrery II. The White House would not confirm whether the new guest suites and offices were included in the 90,000-square foot estimate.
New “guest suites” for the “President’s White House Guests” . . . Not rooms, but “suites” and I noticed how they have made these folks a capitalized noun concept. It seems they are preparing us for a new concept: the Billionaire Donor Who Gets to Stay or Live in the White House.
How many suites will there be? (No info). How large will they be and what will the suites include? (No info.) Who will be these “President’s White House Guests”? (No info.)
Why in a city filled with hotels, and The Blair House available for more formal WH guests, does the president need to knock down the East Wing to build new “guest suites”?
Something tells me that these guest suites are going to be a large part of the story here, and that the ballroom may even be serving as a bit of a distraction.
