Dame Sarah Mullally, 63, has been chosen to serve in the Church of England as Archbishop of Canterbury. Before entering the priesthood Sarah Mullally worked as a nurse in the NHS for 35 years, eventually becoming England's youngest ever chief nursing officer in 1999.
Her career in the Church of England began with volunteer work, before studying to enter the priesthood. In 2012 she became canon treasurer of Salisbury Cathedral. Beginning in 2015 she served as Bishop of Crediton in the diocese of Exeter; she became Bishop of London in 2018.
Mullally is a self-described feminist.
The first women priests of the Church of England were ordained in 1994. The first women bishops were appointed in 2014.
