Rep Lauren Boebert (R-CO) launched her re-election campaign with an email blast asking, "Are aliens real?" I understand that space beings are fascinating for many. And there is a belief among some that the government is covering up alien visitations to Earth. However, is it the issue that will have the voters flocking to the polls in 2026?
According to regular folk, that seems unlikely. A Marquette Law School poll, published October 1, asked Americans which issue matters most to them. Unsurprisingly (poll after poll reveals the same answer), respondents rated bread and butter concerns first (inflation/cost of living 40%) and second (the economy 19%)
Boebert holds aces in her re-election campaign. She is in a safe red seat — she won her 2024 election by over 11%. And she is almost sure to win the GOP nomination as she is the incumbent. And she won the 2024 Republican primary by 39% — even as she dealt with family turmoil and public groping. Ergo, it seems she can say and do whatever she wants, and the MAGAs in Colorado 3 will send her back to DC to do whatever it is she does there.
Anyway, this is some of the text of her Monday email blast (I can't find the original online — I'd love it if someone can, and links to it in the comments):
For decades, our government has shrouded the truth about UFOs in a veil of secrecy.
Strange crafts have been spotted soaring through our skies, defying the laws of physics, and yet the bureaucrats in Washington act like we're too NAIVE to handle the facts.
They tell us we're crazy, like we can't see these things flying through the air with our own eyes.
I SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The American people aren't children to be spoon-fed half-truths or dismissed with vague excuses. We deserve to know what's really going on up there.
I take no position on extraterrestrials. But I suspect that if you interviewed Republican voters who were inclined to agree with Boebert, even they would not identify a federal alien cover-up as a high priority. There is always the fringe. But in this case, I imagine the fringe is small. And ETgate is behind the New World Order, Antifa terrorist cells, democratic child sex-trafficking, Sharia Law, and George Soros on the conspiracy theory list.
Predictably, a Democrat interviewed by FOX31 Denver, Andy Boian, gave Boebert's campaign launch strategy a negative review, saying:
"This is almost a cry for help in politics, to be honest. So I'm not really sure why this would go out to conservatives in her district. And she may raise a few thousand dollars, but she's also going to get a lot of really weird looks."
While Boebert's campaign, equally predictably, considered the kick-off a smashing success, declaring that the digital campaign is "performing extremely well."
American politics is a paradox. In some ways (incipient fascism), it is as serious as a heart attack. In others (see Boebert), it has the substance of wind.
