As the wonderful writer, Rebecca Solnit notes: votes are not valentines, they are chess moves.

Solnit reminds us that none of us wants the awfulness of the current Trump administration to continue – including many former Trump voters. (On my friend’s block in Northern California, there are signs in front of some houses saying “We made a big mistake.”)
That means that we can’t give in to the impulse to chastise voters who went for Trump for whatever reasons they had the last time round. We want them as democratic voters and taking care of all of us. But if we insult them or hate them, it becomes much less likely for them to consider coming over to “our side.“
