Several members of Congress posted a video explaining that members of the military can refuse to obey illegal orders from superiors. They clearly underlined “illegal” orders. Nevertheless, Caroline Leavitt in a news briefing changed this to “legal” orders and defended Donald Trump’s post that called for the execution of these members of Congress on charges of sedition. Calling for the execution of members of Congress is far beyond irresponsible hyperbole. Trump is calling for violence based on his ignorance about the Military Code of Conduct, his advancing dementia, and/or his homicidal bloodlust to be visited on his “enemies.”
Trump’s bloodlust apparently cannot be easily quenched. His attacks on small boats off the coast of Venezuela on the highly questionable justification of drug trafficking is characterized by David Cole, professor at the Georgetown University Law Center as follows: “These are sitting ducks, and we are simply engaged in cold-blooded murder of individuals who may or may not be drug smugglers.” Cole continues that President Trump is “committing homicide” by executing individuals without capture and a trial. “These individuals who have now been sent to the bottom of the sea by this president, if they were tried, at most, would face a sentence of some period of years. There would be no death penalty authorized under the Constitution for these individuals, even assuming they’re guilty.” The blunt reality is that Donald Trump is committing murder in plain sight with apparently the full complicity of the Republican Party. So much for “American exceptionalism.”
