“We the People” are three of the most important words underlying our democracy. They are so simple; together they are a phrase that says it all. Our vote is our power…our protests and resistance are tools of our power as well. Somehow, we the people seemed recently to have forgotten where the power lies in this republic. Too many people grew to believe that their vote didn’t count; it just did’t matter. Along came Donald Trump. MAGA was created to manipulate those who had given up believing in democracy….in the power of the people. MAGA filled the void for them. They believed in Trump, who they gave power because they believed he cared about them and would rule the country with their interests at heart. They made him POTUS. Just tell them what to do to Make America Great Again; which to them meant making their lives better and making them feel powerful by being associated with this POTUS’ actions. They had forgotten that in this country our president leads only when the people agree to follow ( he/she needs the consent of the governed ) - POTUS does not “rule” because the power lies with the people. POTUS’ people have been lied to and misled into believing that they share POTUS’ power and agenda. However, POTUS shares nothing because only he is important to himself. Everyone else is a tool to be used and discarded when no longer needed. This POTUS steals power from the people (and the people’s representatives). A power vampire, if you will. All has been going quite well from this POTUS’ point of view. He has sucked power from law firms, companies, universities and Congress (welcome Cornell University to the list of the weak, power sucked organizations). Finalizing the power grab from the people would be even easier. The people, after all, were fatigued, distracted and economically challenged. No Kings protests made a statement but would actions to stop the power grab take place? Then came the off year elections on November 4th, 2025. The people remembered where the power in these United States lies….with the people. We the people remembered how to keep our power…vote. So now, we the people, like the proverbial poked bear, have awakened. Will we continue to send the message to this POTUS that the real power lies with we the people? That remains to be seen. Eternal vigilance is required to keep POTUS from continuing to seek a way to suck away our voting power but now there is hope and it remains to be seen if we the people will continue through active resistance (voting, protesting, documenting Ice actions, organizing, etc.) to achieve a full reclamation of the power that rightfully belongs to to us. Power to the People!
