Have you ever played “Risk”? (aka: Parker Bros. Game of World Conquest). Remember how hard it is to invade North America? And remember, Ronald Reagan said the biggest falsehood ever told is when the military says “We are here to help you” (* see footnote)
Anyways, instead of supporting our Socialistic Military, run by the government, are there other options? Socialistic, Government run military is just so incredibly expensive. And I live near the center of the nation, so I’d expect invading armies to suffer some attrition by the time they got to me. Anyways… exploring alternatives here.
I looked at the plan offered by the National Rifle Association, but it doesn’t seem to be carefully thought out. In fact, it mostly consists of getting everyone to buy an AR-15. This makes the price much lower than the current government run system, but of course, that is to be expected. No further information is offered by the NRA on how to defend the country with your new AR-15. In fact, they mostly talk about just defending your home and family, which seems to be kind of limited, in a public-spirited sort of way.
I was hoping to find something on the model of the pure Capitalist Fire Departments in some of our more southern states. There, you pay an annual fee for fire protection. If you call 911 because your house is on fire, and you aren’t a member, they may try to sign you up, while they let your house continue to burn. Much different from the Socialistic Fire Departments we have in most places, and of course Socialistic Fire Departments are much more expensive.
We are seeing a resurgence of private, purely Capitalist police departments, especially in the new gated communities for the very rich. I’m not actually sure that makes them less expensive, and since we know that those people * are mostly responsible for crime, and those people * are then exactly the people hired by the rich to do all the work inside the gated communities, I’m not sure this option is going to work out.
But isn’t there something like a National Defense Savings Account, where you pay in, and when you need National Defense you spend your money to hire soldiers for that need? It seems so simple, I don’t know why no one has ever thought of it. Of course, the money from your National Defense Savings Account might run out before the enemy is defeated. Thank goodness that never happens with our Health Savings Accounts. There would have to be a quick way to hire National Defense Workers quickly in time of need. And I deeply resent my opponents trying to call such perfectly Capitalistic National Defense Workers mercenaries. That is uncalled for.
(* footnote: this post was made from an alternate universe, where universal health care is a reality, and the military has to hold bake sales to buy a new bomber.)
( footnote 2: Economists refer to a situation where capitalism fails as a “Market Failing”. An interesting concept, that Capitalism isn’t at all perfect. )
