In case you haven’t heard, Christmas is a week long this year. No, I reindeer shit you not.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, Dec. 18, declaring Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas federal holidays in 2025. Christmas falls on a Thursday this year, meaning some workers will now get an additional break from Wednesday, Dec. 24, through Friday, Dec. 26.
A few extra days off around the holidays is welcome news for most - but not all Americans will reap the benefits.
Who gets Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 off? And will your errands be interrupted by extra closures those days? Here's what to know.
Who gets extra days off? Well, not as many people as you might think. Private employers are under no obligation to give Bob Cratchit time off from the clark’s desk. Also exempt, oddly, are actual federal employees like postal workers and letter carriers.
Still, most federal employees will be getting an unexpected extra two days away from the office. Donald is, in essence, declaring his own government shutdown. But, why?
Well, to begin with, workers in every agency will have a couple of days off from responding to FOIA requests from citizens and journalists. Clerks of federal courts will be unable to file suits to stop the heinous effects of the administration’s policies.
But, in all likelihood, the people this impromptu interlude was designed for are the hard-working ink-rollers in the Department of Justice who might spend those days slathering black ink over Epstein files in preparation for release of another tranche.
So, in the spirit of the season, may I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and to all another interminable delay in reading about Donald Trump drooling over 14-year-olds.
God help us, every one.
