As noted in Kos diaries on the transition to Wordpress, and discussed in this diary by mettle fatigue, the Image Library is going away. No more looking for a pic of a certain person, animal, place or whatever to put in your comment or diary on KOS, you will be finding your own and uploading each time. Also, any unpublished draft material will not follow you over there. However, all PUBLISHED diaries and comments will be ported over. With their images. But not in any way searchable for the image you want.
While the method mettle first suggests is excellent for saving your own draft material and being able to find it again, images are a much bigger project. As we discussed in the comments, I am proposing a large-scale effort to group images by category and publish them in diaries, which will hold quite a lot of images, we haven’t yet tested just how many. Then the diaries, which will share a common tag SaveTheImages, and each one a unique tag and title indicating the contents, will serve as a kind of presorted image library. You should be able to tag-search the whole group, choose your category diary, select, download, and then upload an image to your diary or comment.
THERE ARE A TON OF IMAGES. And a ton of categories. I’ve been working on a list, some of which will almost certainly need to be subdivided in some way as we find the limits of how many pics a diary blank will hold. So far I have:

And I suspect I have left out a lot.
We have two or three months to get these things published so they will cross over in the transition.
What can you do? If you care about saving images, request group membership. Comment here on categories needed. Volunteer for a category that you want to search and save. (Mettle is already working on Judaica, as that is her area of interest, for instance.) I will update this diary with any claimed ones, so we don’t duplicate. (Asterisks in front of category, name after)
Never published a diary before? Not to worry, tutorials will be available. It isn’t that hard.
We will format the diaries as follows:
Title will be Save The Images: (category description)
put some version of this boilerplate at the top:
These diaries are archival, for the transition to WordPress. Please only comment to add images that also fit the category, or to offer information like ID, where it came from, and such.
Once we are in WordPress there will be no site Image Library. But you will be able to search the tag for this group, select the diary with the type of image you want, and click, download, then upload an image into the diary or comment you are working on.
then start dropping in images, with a bit of text in between. Numbers might be good. Just enough to give space around each so they are easier to grab. If you have identifying or explanatory text, copy and paste it in there. If you find duplicates, only grab one.
Just keep dropping them in until it starts to take noticeably longer to save your diary each time. If there’s a lot to go, change the title to include “part 1” and do more parts as needed.
Tags at the bottom should be SaveTheImages, and a unique identifier for that page, as weird as you like, so it doesn’t duplicate other pages. Keep a record of it. If you’re up for it, come back and call dibs on another category.
Inevitably some pictures will be in more than one category and that is totally fine. A picture of Teddy Roosevelt with one of his famous quotations printed on it would be both “past presidents” and “text memes and quotations.” That’s great, it’s more searchable that way.
we will publish the list of unique tags in a group diary once transition occurs (assuming groups still work the same) for the use of all who want findable images.
OK, WHO’S UP FOR A PROJECT?
