Ludvig Munthe: A Winter Evening (undated)
Good evening, Kibitzers!
Is everyone still putting one foot in front of the other? As I write on Monday night — well, as I write, I just hit ‘m’ instead of comma after ‘night’ and autocorrect was quick to supply ‘Monday nightmare’, and I can’t really say it’s wrong.
That aside, here in the Boston area, we got a little snow over Sunday night, then it warmed up, but by Tuesday night it’s supposed to drop like a rock and stay well below freezing for a couple of nights. Then: 100% chance of “wintry mix” on Thursday. I hate wintry mix! But at least it’s precipitating. We can quibble about the form of the precipitation, as long as some manner of dihydrogen monoxide falls from the sky on the regular.
Last week we did morning songs, so this week we have night songs. There are so many, I am sure you have some favorites I didn’t include, so by all means, share them in the thread.
The night has a thousand eyes,
And the day but one;
Yet the light of the bright world dies
With the dying sun.
The Five Satins: In the Still of the Night (released 1956; video from 1959 film Sweet Beat). This is one of those popular titles. Billy Eckstine sings the entirely different Cole Porter song of the same name here.
You are correct: only four Satins are singing in this video. They had a rather turbulent start, and I was not able to discover what happened to the other Satin for this film. [3:07]
Billy Joel: River of Dreams (Frankfurt, Germany, 1993). Night’s not in the title, but it starts every verse, so... [4:47]
Joni Mitchell: Rainy Night House (New Victoria Theatre, London, April 1974). With Tom Scott and the L.A. Express. [4:23]
Sam Cooke: Twistin’ the Night Away (I “did my own research”, and here are my findings: there’s another clip of this same performance in which it’s introduced by Jerry Lewis sitting at a desk. First I thought, “Telethon!”, but that didn’t fit with the approximate timeframe given. I conclude this is from an interval of The Tonight Show between hosts Jack Paar and Johnny Carson, when Lewis was among the guest hosts. So, 1962, not ‘63.) [2:57]
Eddie Rabbitt: I Love a Rainy Night (Austin City Limits TV show, 1984). [3:11]
Patti Smith: Because the Night (unidentified TV appearance, 1978). [3:23]
Prince: It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night (1987 concert film Sign o’ the Times). [8:06]
The Beatles: The Night Before (video from 1965 film Help!, overdubbed with an alternate audio take). [2:34]
Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Aida Garifullina: Moscow Nights (Grafenegg (Austria) Festival Midsummer Night’s Gala, June 2017). [4:20]
Lionel Richie: All Night Long (unidentified venue on the Can't Slow Down Tour, 1984). [5:12]
The Moody Blues: Nights in White Satin (Isle of Wight Festival, 1970). [5:05]
Pat Benetar: Shadows of the Night (New Haven Coliseum, 1982). [4:46]
Cab Calloway: Blues in the Night (unidentified film, ca. 1942). [3:13]
Sting: Bring On the Night (Tokyo Dome, October 1988 — year confirmed by Sting’s outfit). With some of his Blue Turtles jazz band, including Branford Marsalis on sax and Kenny Kirkland on keyboards — Kirkland has a substantial solo in the middle of this. Full personnel listed on the YT page. [10:23]
