The Wall Street Journal first reported that the order could “shut down all functions of the agency [Department of Education] that aren’t written explicitly into statute or move certain functions to other departments,” citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter. Likewise, The Washington Post reported that the order wouldn’t directly abolish the agency but instead “directs the agency to begin to diminish itself,” citing three people who were briefed on the order.
Other sources familiar with talks about the order told Inside Higher Ed as early as Friday that the order would at least direct the education Secretary to come up with a plan to break up the department. No executive order has officially been signed, but a White House official told the Post that one is in the works for later this month and “will fulfill Trump’s campaign pledge to defund the department.”

Only Congress can get rid of the agency, so the executive order would mostly amount to a messaging tactic. But the Trump administration can take other steps to make the agency a shell of itself, from cutting staff to stopping some programs.
Implying Dems need an equally strong, but opposite “messaging tactic” in response.
Something long the lines:
Donald Trump doesn’t care about your kids. Donald Trump doesn’t care about our Teachers.
Donald Trump doesn’t care about America’s Future.

Leon the Axe-man is apparently using his illegal hacking access of OPM and the Treasury Payment System, to figure out which Teachers and Administrators to fire now. Primarily those who took the “training” that the Trump 1.0 Administration required them to take:

Completely shutting down the Department of Education would require legislative action, but it is likely Trump could take some actions to hamper the agency’s power in the meantime.
Employees of DOGE are reportedly probing data from the department while it puts dozens of employees on administrative leave, citing Trump’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) executive order and guidance from the Office of Personnel Management, which has told agencies to rid themselves of individuals associated with DEI.
The union for the employees is alleging the leaves are based on individuals who went to a DEI training that was hosted during Trump’s first term and encouraged by his then-secretary of the department.

Musk: Trump ‘will succeed’ in dismantling Education Department
Sooner or later, the Trump-designated Bull in the China-shop is going to break something — that low-information voters actually care about:
Sorry for the inconvenience: School has been Closed
Until further notice — due to extensive staff lay-offs, and major changes in Trump Administration policies and priorities.
Time to take up Home-schooling America — it’s what everyone wants — some say.
IOW you’re SOL — time to DIY.
