Right as the current maladministration was starting, Jonathan Last at the Bulwark said one way to thwart their plans was to make tRump unpopular.
If he’s unpopular, he has less power. Some Rs will be able to break from him.
Of course, what he has been doing has been making him unpopular.
Let’s take a look at the Newsweek piece (Martha McHardy) with the numbers.
According to a recent Emerson College poll, conducted between March 8 and March 10 among 1,000 registered voters, 50 percent of respondents said they think the country is on the wrong track, while 50 percent said they think that it is headed in the right direction.
This is a shift from the same poll in January when 52 percent of voters said the country was headed in the right direction, while 48 percent said the opposite. Both polls had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
The latest poll conducted by YouGov and The Economist this week showed the same trend, with just 36 percent of respondents saying the country is headed in the right direction, down from 43 percent in the poll conducted the previous week, and 52 percent saying it is headed in the wrong direction, up from 48 percent the previous week.
tRump is less popular than Biden was at this stage. Heck he’s less popular than he was at this stage in 2017.
And people are noticing that he sucks at the economy:
Why does this matter? Well, here’s that bit from Jonathan Last
How to Stop Trump in One Stupid Chart Jonathan V. Last The Bulwark at Substack
I gave you the stupidest possible headline today, but only because I couldn’t think of a less dumb way to say the most obvious thing in the world. Stopping Trump’s war on America isn’t like solving Fermat’s Last Theorem. It’s actually quite simple. ✂️
At -1.6 unfavorable, Trump is a juggernaut. At -18 unfavorable, Trump is weak.
Pushing him to -18 is Democrats’ job. Their entire job. In fact, I’m not sure that anything else they do over the next year even matters. ✂️
You will note that over the course of eight years Donald Trump has been at his current level of relative popularity only twice. The normal state of affairs for Trump has been a net unfavorable level of roughly -13.
Which means that we’re not trying to argue people into buying sunscreen during a blizzard. People don’t like the guy. They’re used to not liking the guy.
If tRump’s popularity goes down, then he will have a hard time passing things. SCOTUS will be less obedient.
He’s got things we can do in that piece at Substack, and of course tRump is helping a lot.
Keep it up, friends. The resistance has power. Let’s push him off that cliff.
Just a quick hit for mid-week!!!
