UPDATE ~ 5pm: I understand it’s been done. 60 votes for cloture. SHAME!!!!!
Very fast diary …. Just heard from Thom Hartmann that former speaker Nancy Pelosi has given her take on what’s going on in the Senate. He found the article with her statement in “The Hill”.
Highlights:
Direct quote from her statement:
“Democratic senators should listen to the women,” Pelosi said. “Appropriations leaders [Rep.] Rosa DeLauro [D-Conn.] and [Sen.] Patty Murray [D-Wash.] have eloquently presented the case that we must have a better choice: a four-week funding extension to keep government open and negotiate a bipartisan agreement.”
You may recall that funding extension was brought up by Mr. Schumer himself when he originally discussed the Senate vote on cloture to allow the bill to be brought forward for a vote.
We heard Schumer’s statement last evening, and could have watched Chris Hayes show to see, his explanation for his plan to vote *for* the “continuing resolution” (IMHO, it’s nothing of the sort). He reiterated that shutting down the government would be an even worse choice, allowing Tru-sk free reign over a rapid, complete (my interpretation of his word) destruction of the government.
She compared Schumer’s capitulation to Minority Leader Jeffries’ actions to hold together his caucus, saying:
“I salute Leader Hakeem Jeffries for his courageous rejection of this false choice, and I am proud of my colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus for their overwhelming vote against this bill.”
Her thoughts about the “Hobson’s choice” that the Senate has regarding the “continuing resolution”:
“Donald Trump and Elon Musk have offered the Congress a false choice between a government shutdown or a blank check that makes a devastating assault on the well-being of working families across America. Let’s be clear: neither is a good option for the American people. But this false choice that some are buying instead of fighting is unacceptable.”
She expressed the anger of the full Democratic Caucus in the House with the Senate ...
… for not holding the line and using a shutdown to negotiate a better funding deal.
Amen, sister!
