I’m going to pull the old man experience card here as unpopular as it likely will be. I can see why Leader Schumer and other more senior members of the Senate voted to avoid the shutdown. They saw the trap. Were there some side roads that he could have taken to give the appearance of a fight, sure but the outcome was inevitable. Losing for a noble cause is still losing. It can be deflating to fight till the end in a battle and we can’t win. Democrats had no chance. Save it for a winnable fight. When faced with only bad choices, take the least disastrous one.
Trump using War Powers arguments to break the law for his deportations was probably what caused Schumer to rethink his stance. He believed, rightly or wrongly, that Trump would have done something similar with a government shut down to aggregate more power. It would have delayed the lawsuits and DOGE would have zero impediments to access of these offices. Trump may have even declared Martial Law or some more obscure executive power we’ve never heard of. So I think Schumer took the path that avoided the worse case scenario. The economy is most likely going to go into a recession. We need Republicans to own that recession outright.
