If only Ukraine had its own eyes in the sky and wasn’t so dependent on U.S. provided Early Warning and Control data the situation in Kursk would likely be much different today. Krasnov’s betrayal of Ukraine by shutting down intelligence and Early Warning and Control data sharing … conveniently just in time for Russia to launch its multi-pronged offensive on Ukrainian forces in Kursk is another cautionary tale against being completely dependent on another country for such critical information. The Ukrainians and the rest of the free world have just learned another unfortunate lesson about their erstwhile “dependable ally”, the United States of America.

It is hard at this point to explicitly prove the Putin-Trump connivance but there is too much smoke to discount the existence of that treacherous fire. It was a painful loss for the Ukrainians. David Axe of Forbes estimates that Ukraine lost as many tanks in Kursk as the Russians … an arithmetic that is not favorable to the relatively under-resourced Ukrainians:

But the ever ADAPTIVE Ukrainians have managed to make the best of the betrayal in Kursk without making a big public fuss about it … just pull out the crack brigades in another one of their now storied aptitude for conducting an orderly retrograde, shore up the border with Russian Kursk by creating a buffer zone and go after another part of the soft underbelly of Russia … in next door Belgorod Oblast.

No need for another ugly public dust up with Krasnov over this betrayal. For the Ukrainians this is also not the time to wallow in recriminations and “what ifs”. It is, however the time to get on with making sure this travesty never happens to them again… to never depend on someone else’s untrustworthy “eyes” in a fight for their lives. Enter the good people of Sweden. In May 2024, Sweden surprised every one by announcing that they will gift Ukraine two of their Saab 340 AEW&C planes. And just today Sweden announced that the planes are on schedule and ready pending completion of requisite modifications to ensure interoperability with Ukraine’s newly arriving F-16s. As well that Sweden for security reasons, would not disclose “when and where certain actions took place or will take place.” Excellent idea, given the present circumstances:

It bears noting that while having their own “eyes” in the sky will greatly benefit Ukraine, both Forbes and Militarnyi , among others underscore the fact that Russia will be gunning to take these prized but somewhat vulnerable planes down:
given that Russia has already lost several of its own A-50 long-range airborne radar aircraft during the full-scale war against Ukraine.
