A groggy-brained attempt at satire by me, from very, very early this morning.
“Today I have signed an Executive Order, as part of our DEI initiatives, outlawing rainbows. We will impose the maximum penalty for those creating rainbows and the people financing them,” said President [sic] Trump.
“In doing our part to facilitate this order, I have ordered all of our coal mines reopened and running at full capacity to increase green house emissions. No more rain, no more rainbows, amirite?” said Governor Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia.
Does this count for West Virginia content?

What's Trump's endgame with global tariffs? Canadian officials say they have a clearer idea
After a lengthy meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump's top trade officials on Thursday, Canadian representatives say they have a clearer understanding of the rationale behind Trump's insistence on tariffs — not just on Canada but on the whole world.
"Tariffs are now a global policy of the United States," said David Paterson, Ontario's representative in Washington. "And this is a historic change to global trading patterns, and [the Americans are] very aware of that."
Paterson, along with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Canada's ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, and federal cabinet ministers, met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer — the point people on Trump's trade agenda.

I think that the author is giving the U.S. government (such as it is) too much credit, that this is flatly a reflection of stupidity, greed and lust for power. Maybe they were simply being nice. Canadians have a reputation for that.

The next two are South Dakota specific. I’m not sure if that reflects my own biases (raised near Minnesota’s border with South Dakota) or if they are truly interesting.

Q&A: Meet the conservative working to make environmentalism nonpartisan
A national nonprofit working to promote a middle ground on environmentalism launched with an event Thursday in the South Dakota city of Belle Fourche, which advertises itself as the geographic center of the United States.
Benji Backer, 27, of Seattle, is the founder of Nature is Nonpartisan. The self-described conservative environmentalist founded the American Conservation Coalition in 2017 while in college. That conservative group promotes policies like free-market approaches to climate change and environmental policy. In 2024, Backer wrote a book, “The Conservative Environmentalist,” outlining his vision for right-of-center environmentalism.
With his new group, Backer is bringing people together from across the political spectrum.

The process that could allow concealed guns in bars was a joke, but the bill isn’t
Two guys walk into a bar in South Dakota.
Come July 1, the punchline is that they could legally bring concealed pistols with them, unless Gov. Larry Rhoden vetoes HB 1218.
On March 12, the South Dakota Legislature voted to repeal a current state law that says “a person may not carry a concealed pistol in any licensed on-sale malt beverage or alcoholic beverage establishment that derives over one-half of its total income from the sale of malt or alcoholic beverages.”
This legislation is bad for many reasons, the most obvious being that alcohol and firearms do not mix.

Reps. Maloy, Kennedy heckled and shouted down during rowdy University of Utah town hall
Utah Reps. Celeste Maloy and Mike Kennedy were met with boos, jeers and profanity-laden signs during a town hall at the University of Utah on Thursday evening, the latest in a string of contentious events between lawmakers and their constituents around the country.
It was the first town hall of the year for Kennedy and Maloy, Utah’s newest Republican representatives, who touched on a number of issues related to Congress, the Trump administration and federal spending.
But the night was defined by the crowd of roughly 300 people, most of whom were there to protest.
Before Kennedy was even in the building, a woman shouted “you f——r” at him as he stepped out of his car. As a congressional staffer told the crowd there would be an opening prayer, it was met with cackles from a woman in attendance. Just a few minutes in, Kennedy suggested to police that they should remove a man he dubbed “Mr. Outburst.” “Let me finish my answer,” became a common refrain from Maloy during the night. And as Kennedy, who left a few minutes before Maloy, went to take a selfie with the crowd on his way out, dozens of people stood up to give him the middle finger.

Capacity crowds turn out in Colorado for Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez
he two most prominent voices on the Democratic Party’s progressive left wing visited Colorado’s Front Range on Friday to make the case that a fight against a billionaire “oligarchy” should be the focal point of the party’s resistance to the second Trump administration.
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York drew large crowds at stops in Greeley and Denver, part of a “Fighting Oligarchy” tour through multiple Western states while Congress is in recess. The Denver crowd at Civic Center Park was estimated at 30,000 people, with fences that closed off the event surrounded by spectators as well.
“In the hundreds of rallies that I have done, we have never, ever had a rally as large as this,” Sanders said. “And Denver, your presence here today is not just significant for Colorado. You are sending a profound message all over the world. The whole world is watching, and they want to know if the people of America are going to stand up to Trumpism, oligarchy and authoritarianism.”
A capacity crowd packed into the University of Northern Colorado’s Bank of Colorado Arena booed as Sanders, an independent socialist who caucuses with the Democrats, recounted his attendance at President Donald Trump’s second inauguration alongside Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and other ultra-wealthy figures with close ties to the president.

I think that gives me all four corners. I vaguely recall having some New Mexico content. In fact, I may have done every state west of the Mississippi River.
