I just received some amazing news.
Especially now that we are in middle of the political shitstorm created by the Trump administration and his constant attacks on immigrants, refugees and other other communties at risk.
One of my stories is being use as an assignment as part of a Introduction to Linguistics class at one of the City Colleges of Chicago.
Even more amazing is that the story being use is the very first story I told many years ago at The Moth slam.
Who would have known that my decision to tell a story as way to fight the stutter that haunted my childhood would have such a huge impact in my life and become part of a lesson plan for College students years later?
To think that I almost chicken out, due to the fact that English is not my first language and my fear that no one was going to care or relate to the retelling of my experience arriving from Guatemala to Chicago.
I am glad that my wife was there that day to support me and encourage me not to chicken out from sharing my story. Her support gives me life.
I am thankful to the teaching staff at Harry S Truman College for using my story in their curriculum, and I am thankful to the art of storytelling for all the wonderful blessing that has brought to my life, I think that if I could go back in time and tell my younger stuttering self that I would travel the world telling stories and that those stories would be use by teachers in institutions of learning I would probably not believe myself.
Sometimes, I still find it hard to believe it.
You can find that story and others in my web site
