MAGA is so detached from reality that I wouldn’t waste my time asking these people anything, but I want to ask every non-MAGA Trump voter this series of questions: Is this really what you wanted? You hated inflation, you thought immigration should be more tightly controlled, you didn’t think Kamala Harris would be a good president, or you just wanted to own the libs. OK. But is this really what you had in mind?
Did you really want government employees fired, regardless of the work they were doing?
Did you really want workers at nuclear facilities to be fired – then quickly rehired when the stupidity of such a move was called out?
Did you really want FAA employees fired, to be replaced by inexperienced air-traffic controllers?
Did you really want national parks to operate with skeleton crews, endangering visitors while destroying beautiful natural environments?
Did you really want the Department of Veteran Affairs to lose money and workers, so that American vets have trouble getting benefits they deserve? Really?
Did you really want medical research of all kinds discontinued? Do you really not see any benefit to that research? Really?
Did you really want the U.S. to leave the World Health Organization?
Did you really want America to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement? Do you still not believe that climate change is real and very dangerous?
Did you really want all federal money for alternative energy development to dry up? Do you want to say goodbye to all of the progress that’s been made?
Did you really want education to be privatized because public funds are gone?
Did you really want the EPA being run by someone who doesn’t even want it to exist? Is a clean, healthy environment not important to you? Will it be just fine to let corporations pollute as much as they want? Is it OK that people tasked with responding to disasters (oil spills, chemical leaks, etc.) are being fired?
Did you really want federal consumer protection entities to be eliminated, or rendered completely dysfunctional?
Did you really want mass layoffs at NIH and CDC? Do you no longer think that government should try to protect its people from disease?
Did you really want someone who doesn’t believe in vaccines to be in charge of HHS?
Did you really want lineman, engineers, and dispatchers who keep our nation’s power grid operational to be fired?
Did you really want safety inspectors at large infrastructure projects fired, so that new construction may or may not be safe?
Did you really want a president who has said that we should do away with FEMA and let states handle disasters on their own?
Did you really want an administration that has promised to cut back on bank regulations, putting everyday peoples’ hard-earned money at risk?
Did you really want tariffs that will spike inflation and possibly lead to economically devastating trade wars?
Did you really want the stock market to tank, as investors reeled from the on-again, off-again tariff announcements?
Did you really want a president who promised lower prices and a booming economy on Day 1, but now says that we may be headed for a recession, and will dishonestly blame said recession on Biden?
Did you really want senior citizen citizens to be terrified due to the mixed messages about Social Security and Medicare? Do you honestly think that our nation’s seniors should have their meager SS incomes either lowered or lost? Really?
Did you really want a South African billionaire who has supported far-right (including neo-Nazi) movements all over the world as co-president with Trump?
Did you really want the world’s richest man making decisions about people who have next to nothing? Is it OK that Musk has made 38 billion in federal contracts, subsidies, and tax credits?
Did you really want Musk and a group of teens and twenty-somethings to gain access to all of your financial records?
Did you really want all of this done despite it being unconstitutional?
Did you really want a president who is doing everything he can to concentrate all federal power in the executive branch? It’s really OK to do away with our 240 year old system of checks and balances?
Did you really want the Justice Dept to be turned into Trump’s own private legal attack dog?
Did you really want a president who will urge Congress to impeach any judge who rules against him?
Did you really want every aspect of Project 2025 realized within Trump’s first year?
Did you really want January 6th to be considered an attack by capitol officers against peaceful protestors?
Did you really want all of the protestors pardoned, including those with previous criminal records?
Did you really want one of the world’s most prolific drug dealers pardoned along with the others?
Did you really want all references to slavery, racism, injustice, etc. removed from federal websites? It is alright to get rid of any references to WWII soldiers who were women and/or people of color?
Did you really want all women and people of color Trump and Musk fire to be considered “DEI” hires?
Did you really want colleges to lose federal grants if they allow protests on campus?
Did you really want states to lose federal funding if they put up any resistance to Trump’s policies?
Did you really want a leader who labels every single critic or opponent a “radical, leftist horrible person”?
Did you really want only a few news outlets to have access to government? Did you want lawsuits filed against any media entity that reports unfavorably about Trump?
Did you really want to alienate all of our closest allies and embrace the world’s dictators?
There are many more “Did you really wants?” but I’ll stop there. Every single one of these things is happening. It isn’t left-wing paranoia. It isn’t that most idiotic of phrases – “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” It’s all happening right now. If you answered “No” to most or even some of the questions, why are you accepting it all? Why aren’t you joining the voices of good people who want
medical research
and disease control
and unimpeded veterans’ benefits
and a healthy environment
and consumer protection
and security for our country’s seniors
and a government that splits power between three branches and a country that acknowledges its history – both good and bad
and a president who governs for all citizens – not just those who agree with him and leadership not tied to a self-serving, far-right billionaire and a free press, able to report as it wished without fear of reprisal and the centuries-old right to protest
On the other hand, if you answered “Yes” to most of the questions, then I want nothing to do with you. You aren’t a friend. You aren’t an ally. You aren’t a “fellow American.” I fear you far more than I fear any external enemy (except perhaps Putin, who plays Trump like a marionette, and by association, you and his other minions).
If you’re somewhere in the middle on this whole question of who you are and what you want this country to be, then I ask you to sit down and really ponder what is important to you as a citizen of the United States and the world.
