Apparently the auto companies “asked him to.” Maybe that happened. Maybe what they asked was “Are you a lunatic? Manufacture of ‘American’ cars is interconnected through ALL THREE COUNTRIES!!”
Or maybe it was all a bluff, designed to bring Canada and Mexico running to the negotiating table for whatever Trump could squeeze out of them.
Trump plays international affairs the way he played property development. In New York, he filed lawsuits to bring people to the table and squeeze concessions from them beyond what was originally agreed.
And he’s still doing the same thing, with tariffs: threaten them, hope to bring people to the table, squeeze out a few more concessions and declare victory.
It remains to be seen whether that tactic works as well with sovereign nations as it did with land-developers. I suspect not. But it’s all Trump knows. Many builders and developers in NYC refused to do business with him at all. For that, and for otherwise breaking agreements. And not getting paid. We’ll see how well that plays out in the big world.
