Good morning, Newdists! We have a friend from out of town visiting this week, so we’ve been taking her out to all of our favorite food spots. Last night, we went to Phat Eatery, a James Beard Award semifinalist that features Malaysian street food made slightly more upscale. It’s hands-down one of our favorite Houston area restaurants, and we always spend way too much money when we’re there. I thought I’d share pics from last night’s dinner, since my diary ideas are currently in short supply!
The must-have thing to get at Phat Eatery is the roti, which is a very soft and flaky flatbread that comes with chicken curry for dipping. So good! I could eat a dinner of just roti. We got it alongside calamari for an appetizer. Their calamari also happens to be the best fried calamari I’ve had anywhere.
Instead of getting individual orders, we got three entrees to eat family-style. First up was Malaysian chicken curry, which is a coconut milk based curry that can be spicy, but we got mild because two of us were white, lol.
This coconut shrimp was a new one for us, and we’ll be getting it again every time we come back. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and were so tender and juicy. The coconut mixture it’s battered in is sort of sweet, and this is going to sound strange, but the flavor and aroma almost reminds me of a funnel cake. I don’t know why, but something about it is giving funnel cake.
Finally, my personal favorite and the thing I have to get every time we’re here, beef rendang. It’s another Malaysian curry made with coconut milk, but it reminds me more of beef stew. Again, it can pack some heat, but this one didn’t. We were getting full by the time this came out, so I’ll get to have leftover beef rendang for lunch!
New Day Cafe is an open thread!

Today at The Inoculation Project, we’re helping two elementary schools: an Oklahoma school library needs some jigsaw puzzles, and a Georgia school’s STEM lab needs coding robots. We'd love to see you there, and coincidentally, to have your tips, recs, and social media shares, to help us reach more eyes!
