We got married in Philadelphia a couple decades ago. We had the ceremony in a Catholic Church, and the reception in a beautiful greenhouse in Fairmount Park. We got a marriage certificate from the City of Philadelphia, went on our honeymoon, and my wife changed her name to mine.
Some years later, the government was telling everyone that you will need a “real ID” to get on domestic airplane flights. My wife travels a lot, so she went to PennDOT to get hers. She brought the marriage certificate that we were provided, and she was told, no, this isn’t the “official” marriage license. You have to request that from the city. How do you do that? Glad you asked!
To get the “official” marriage from the City of Philadelphia you need to send them:
- A certified check
- A self addressed stamped envelope
- A letter explaining what you are asking for, and signed.
- All this just to get the certificate they should have given you to begin with
So now, Republicans are pushing something called the “SAVE” Act. This is ostensibly to ensure non-citizens don’t vote, something which is extremely rare, but you knew that. Of course, built into this “SAVE” Act are the same requirements that they have for “Real ID”. So, yeah, we know the real reason for this nonsense. They want to keep women from voting in federal elections. Please contact your representatives in Congress. Especially MAGA Democrats like John Fetterman. Stop the SAVE Act!
