Good News Roundups (GNRs) are a long-running series. Our writers collect upbeat news about the nation and world, news that we do not get from down-beating corporate media. Choosing not to flee or freeze, with the help of Good News Roundups we engage (fight). We don’t passively wait for the future to arrive, we invite the future with our actions. At our cores, know that doom-scrolling beats down inhibits our physical and mental health, so we choose to clean and feed in a flood of good news. You can read more good news by our writers here.
Welcome to this Good News Roundup!
If you’re new to Good News Roundups, please check out our longer welcome.
Happy Birthday Gnuville! 8 years old in May 2025!
Mayor Goodie brought her Good News Roundups to Daily Kos in May 2017. We are almost 8 years old!
What are your reflections of the founding of Gnuville? What brought you to Gnuville? What keeps you coming back?
Please send us your musings:
Deadline May 18. I plan to gather all the comments in one grand “Thank You, Gnuville“ diary.
From Jessica Craven, Chop Wood, Carry Water, 4/25
Hi, all, and happy Friday.
Also, happy George Santos sentencing day. Seven years in prison! It appears that not every Republican is above the law. Nice to see a modicum of justice delivered—even if it’s not yet to the people who most deserve it.
This isn’t the only good news we’ve gotten in the last 24 hours—in fact there’s been quite a lot of it. Most of you read Robert Hubbell (and if you don’t, you should) so I won’t repeat the litany of court cases Trump just lost—you can find them in Hubbell’s latest column. Suffice it to say there were many, and they were all significant.
Trump’s polling, moreover, is free falling. He’s even losing ground on immigration. In fact, a new polling memo published today by Research Collaborative and ASO Communications shows a majority of likely voters now support impeaching him. Good!
On trade, Trump looks to be caving in a big way. Josh Marshall from Talking Points Memo thinks the U.S. is going to come out of the fight with China empty handed, and soon. It’s a huge comedown from the administration’s bluster of a few weeks ago, and it’s more proof that Trump is a blowhard and bully who almost always backs down at the first challenge. Let’s make sure everyone knows it.
By retreating on tariffs, furthermore, Trump’s managing to fail multiple groups of supporters at once. Pro-tariff voters (to the extent that there are any left) will be angry he gave in; small business owners will feel bruised and exhausted by the back-and-forth and uncertain of their futures, everyone else will see only the massive, long-term damage Trump’s actions have caused to our economy, the U.S. dollar, and the stock market—with absolutely no upside. It’s a total debacle.

The Five R’s of the Resistance:
I’ve repeated these for many years. I’ve added boycott.
- Resist: Boycott, protest on the streets, call senators and representatives, etc.
- Rebel: Run for office, GOTV (Get Out The Vote), support a progressive.
- Revolt: Change the laws, change the culture, build your communities.
- Rely: Trust that millions of others are fighting the good fight.
- Rest: Take care of yourself, we are in this for the long term.
WineRev’s Good and Goofy Notes
Watch for WineRev’s History Corner in the comments to see what others went through, struggled with, and surmounted in the past. His G&G comments are mini Good News Roundups. WineRev, last Sunday:
Good Morning and Happy Easter Sunday! Thank you, 2thanks, for getting things started among the decorated eggs, the chocolate troves and the potted lilies. For centuries in the Western World this has been the Day of Days for Christians, the story of Hope Solidified, so its worth ending fasts (like Lent) with baked ham and other goodies in the presence and at the table with family and relatives.
The Gnuville Breakfast Brunch welcomes one and all to the Great RoundUp of Good News this Sunday. The Beverage Bar has been heating up coffee, tea and mocha-cocoa, while the Mimosa Bar is having quite the run on orange juice encountering champagne/prosecco in fluted glasses. The Steam Table has baked up, fried, griddled, toasted and microwaved a wide selection of Day Starting/Week Launching goodies for your plate, so take a tray and point to what you’d like.
The No Downers Lounge has recliners, rockers, wingbacks and sofas for everyone, and as everyone settle in for the Great Reading of Wi-Fi, there are plenty of potted lilies, purple or gold ribbons and spring finery in the room and on your fellow Gnusies. On your glowing pixel screen, take in the stories, make a comment, chip in a rec, offer a thought…..or a hand….or a shoulder to cry on…..or a kind word to those having a hard morning. 2thanks has set out the Brunch and hidden various Easter eggs in all the stories, and it is also good YOU are here, with your blessings and your needs. Plenty of places and people here to swap those with you.
Science
Not a normal gut bacterium, but Vibrio cholerae, which causes cholera. Image found in the Daily Kos Image Library.
A small, preliminary trial and studies in mice draw links between fibromyalgia and alterations of the gut microbiome.
✂
The trial had no control group, and all the participants knew that they were receiving the treatment — limitations that could skew the results. Even so, “these findings are really impressive”, says Andreas Goebel, a pain scientist at the University of Liverpool, UK, who was not involved in the research. He also notes the study’s limited sample size, but sees the improvements in some participants as a promising sign, given that people with treatment-resistant fibromyalgia “usually don’t respond to anything”, he says. “This is going in the right direction.”
✂
Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, the study “definitively demonstrates that the microbiome is at least one of many things that can contribute to pain in this disease”, says neuroscientist Katelyn Sadler at the University of Texas at Dallas. “That is a really big and exciting finding.” The results, she says, could lead to non-painkiller-based therapies for people with chronic pain. But it’s still unclear whether the factors that cause microbial changes in fibromyalgia are genetic or environmental, she says.
Please share good science news with us! (Especially JWST, health, environment.)
A good place to look for science news if you are waiting for the Sunday Roundup is the archive of Overnight News Digest. On Saturdays, the OND always focuses on science, though not all of it is devoted to what I would call Good Science News.

Notes on Images
Top Image: Our Starhawk created the above this detailed sketch of a gnu in brown, green, and black on white. A happy and dynamic gnu rises on a hind leg in a classic heraldric rampant stance. Joyful letters prance above and behind the mane: “Happy Dance.” Signature: Nick Korolev, 2021. — Thank you, Starhawk, for our dancing gnu!

A Little Bit About Me
(Sorry, too busy caregiving to update this section.)
Our Roundup is almost open!
Thank you for fighting for truth and justice with all us Gnusies! 40% of our Readers don’t visit every day, 50% of us do, and 10% are here for the first time! We all do what we can. Since 2017, we’ve shared positive news, laughed, organized, resisted, rebelled, revolted without being revolting, relied, rested, mentored, created, crossed rivers, chewed our cud, puffed methane out both ends, and laughed. Here’s looking at you, kid, and standing upwind! Beginners, you are cordially invited to comment!
As always, please share more Good News than I can find or provide.
This is a group diary, and by my power I declare this Good Gnus Salo(o)n open! Let the good-news sharing and community building begin! Laissez les bonnes nouvelles rouler!
Power with, not power over ❤️ ✊ ❤️
2thanks (he, him)
Thank You!: Many regular Roundup readers know that I’m the co-founding Admin and background mentor of the Good News Roundup group. Over the years I’ve supported and led this and other Daily Kos groups that have raised almost $1M for candidates, individuals, and groups. In response to my previous requests, many readers sent me gifts, $1500 so far toward my goal of $12,000. Team 2thanks thanks you! 💙
I’m now asking for help to pay for my wife’s medical treatments. If you value my gifts and activism, please don’t patronize me, but be my patron. Gift me via PayPal (click “Friend,”) Venmo, or CashApp, or send me a kosmail for my address. If you can't do that, I understand. Perhaps, instead, you could boost this story onsite or online. If you already sent me a gift, I bow deeply in gratitude. ~2thanks
