Not much of a story here, just a request that I hope gets enough recs to show the community moderators that an addition to the Rules of the Road needs to be made.
AI Images are theft. There is no ethical use of generative AI to create images. AI images appear regularly in DKOS diaries, at this point on a daily basis. Major contributors like Egberto and Tom Hartman regularly use AI images in their diaries. Speaking as an artist, I cannot tell you how depressed it makes me to see this webpage allow for such brazen theft on a daily basis.
Every use of generative AI wastes energy, and water. Every use of generative AI to create images steals from the work of artists who cannot afford to have their work stolen. We are contributing to the permission structure that allows big fascist tech companies to continue their brazen theft of the intellectual and creative property of artists all over the world.
Please, please stop using AI images in your diary. And please, DKOS, ban the use of AI images entirely. Theft is theft. Please rec this diary if you want Daily Kos to take a principled stand against the use of generative AI in diaries.
EDIT — There have been some pretty sketchy defenses put forward for the use of AI Images. Here’s the analogy —
AI models stole the car. You have come to them, you’ve told them how you think the paint job should look at the end of the process. They continue to steal images from other artists and paint the stolen car vaguely to your specifications. You drive around in the stolen car and call yourself an artist because you described the paint job.
The car is still stolen. The “art” had nothing to do with your hand or creativity. Every inch of that art was *also* stolen by the car thief.
ChatGPT is a chop shop, not an artist’s tool. So is every other generative AI tool used in this regard.
