I saw this story in my newsfeed today and thought, “well, that figures ...”
PHOENIX — Grand Canyon University has announced that the U.S. Department of Education rescinded a $37.7 million fine that was proposed against the school over accusations that it misled students about the cost of its graduate programs.
GCU President Brian Mueller said the fine dismissal is welcome news, “The facts clearly support our contention that we were wrongly accused of misleading our Doctoral students and we appreciate the recognition that those accusations were without merit,” Mueller said. “GCU is a leader in innovation, transparency and best practices in higher education and we look forward to working cooperatively with the Department in the future – just as we have with all regulatory agencies.”
The country’s largest Christian university, which has more than 100,000 students mostly in online programs, had faced the largest fine of its kind ever dealt by the U.S. Education Department. The university has always denied any wrongdoing and said it was being unfairly targeted in retaliation for an ongoing lawsuit.
The fine was imposed in 2023 for misleading students about how much a doctorate would cost at GCU. They claim to be a Christian university, but they seem to have forgotten a couple of those pesky commandments ...
8. Thou shall not steal.
9. Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
The timing could not be more suggestive, because the fine was imposed during the Biden administration, and was revoked during the current administration, led by a man whose private company masquerading as a university was sued for breach of contract, fraud, negligent misrepresentation and bad faith.
No word yet whether GCU has to rename themselves “Trump University” as part of the settlement.
