I’m 72 and a life long Catholic. I’m also a retired social worker so you can guess where my beliefs landed. The Catholic Church is so big it is like the Bible. You can find many viewpoints that completely contradict one another. The Vance view is a simple one and it is best explained by something I remember from the 1950’s. We went to church every Sunday. For several weeks the pastor preached on the same topic and every week my Dad was compelled to talk about it to us, to my Mom and to anybody else who would engage him in discussion. It seems there was disagreement about a phrase in the Bible. There were two interpretations. One was, “Peace on earth, good will toward men”. The other was, “Peace on earth to men of good will”. One was inclusive and the other selective. I don’t recall what my Dad thought. I’d guess Vance is selective.
