I would like to interrupt "normal programming and broadcasting" and put the Los Angeles crisis and the 47/Musk feud aside for a moment. I want to announce some really good news out of Georgia. This does not appear to have been reported on Daily Kos yet.
In a shocking and surprising turn, which Democratic Party Election Attorney Marc Elias called a "blockbuster ruling" during an interview with Brian Tyler Cohen, the ultra-conservative Georgia Supreme Court just dealt a huge blow to Number 47 and the GOP. The court unanimously struck down four extremist rules that were adopted by the Georgia State Election Board.
According to the Associated Press, the four rules that were overturned by the court were:
- The requirement that ballots be hand-counted to slow down vote counting processes.1
- Requiring voters to provide a signature and a photo ID when dropping off absentee ballots.1
- Election board members being allowed to conduct a so-called "reasonable inquiry" prior to certifying results.1
- Election board members being granted access to documents related to elections.1
This is a huge win for Georgia voters, and perhaps voters across the nation as a whole. Keep in mind that the Georgia Supreme Court is overwhelmingly Republican.
Since this is a state Supreme Court ruling, this is quite unlikely to go to SCOTUS.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that democracy and the rule of law prevail in America. 🤞👨⚖️⚖️
