Vincent Scardina, the owner of a small Key West, Florida roofing company, supported Trump’s tough (inhumane? stoopid?) immigration policies. Then, on May 27, ICE swooped in and hauled off 6 of his workers on their way to a job — fully 1/3 of his workforce.
Adding to Scardina’s annoyance, the men had valid work permits and pending asylum applications, according to their attorney Regilucia Smith. “They are legally here,” she said. “Valid work permit, not even close to expired… again, no criminal records—not here, not in Nicaragua.”
Scardina lamented that being in a small market, “We’re not able... to just replace people as easily as, say, a big city, [with] very limited people to pull from, and then you would have to train them, and that takes sometimes years...I know of one landscaper that lost nine or 10 of his whole crew he had and he’s just totally out of business all of a sudden, just like that.”
When asked if he regretted his support of Donald Trump, Scardina replied, “Buyer’s remorse? I don’t know, a little bit.” Ya think?
I’d like to know if his remorse is more about the injustice Trump is visiting upon decent humans in this country legally? Is it about the erosion of our democracy and rule of law at the direction of Trump? Or is it that his business will be adversely impacted?
