I hitchhiked a lot, decades ago, cross country. It was way easier to catch a ride while holding a sign with your destination. It had to be quickly legible to passing drivers. Pen on cardboard doesn't work. Also standing on a freeway ramp in Minnesota with a sign for Seattle doesn't work -- even a driver going that far doesn't want to be stuck with stranger for 24 hours.
So I got a piece of white vinyl, maybe a foot by 2.5 feet, made sleeves for the ends by duct taping the ends back, put sticks in the sleeves so I could hold it up, and cut a bunch of pieces of electrical tape with which I could form block letters. I had a cheap, legible, changeable sign. I would start from home with FARGO, when in that ride change it to BISMARK, then BILLINGS, then BOZEMAN, then MISSOULA, then SPOKANE, always aiming for the next significant city a few hours away.
I humbly suggest this system for the NO KINGS protest tomorrow, though you probably want a bigger sign for more than one word. Still, having it changeable, compact if you roll it up, and easily legible at a distance is all good. And it is easy to store for the next demonstration, because we are pretty certain to have three years plus to protest. Or maybe celebrate once in a while!
I also thought up a few things to put on one. I currently live in Canada so I won't be out there myself but here's some ideas:
