JUNETEENTH TODAY celebrates news which came two years late?
We’d need another “trustbuster” like Roosevelt to break up the mass of communication conglomerates, “all the better to propagandize us my dears."
Complaining about change of news from “public service” to profit making ——we forgot even traveling news spreaders called troubadours got feted with food and other needs. Info always has some sort of cost to someone—-even if it is just us spending our volunteer time to gather it.
We cannot ALL start a great website like dkos or run “pirate” radio stations.
But we each CAN do “SOMETHING”
Even if it is just spreading information by talking to a neighbor about getting local pothole filled.
If u write comments or diaries here ……u r already are a small time "journalist." How about taking one more step?
Anything local. Just some ideas below.
- letter to editor of your smallest local paper— anonymous if u wish. Why? They may or may not print it without your true name. But, if not, u have brought up a subject or opinion, and that may spur them to explore it. Or did u think they get all their story ideas by themselves?
- Start a tiny local newsletter….Mark Twain did.
- Write a story about a local need and submit it.
4. Call in to correct/discuss a lie on local talk radio.
5. Go observe in courtrooms until you see patterns and want to know more. U are the public. They must know we watch in real life……and care about justice.
6. Be carefull, but take pics of event u witness.
7. Attend school board or county commission meetings.
None of us have all the answers, or even all the questions.
But enslavers consider it high priority to prevent folks from learning histories and spreading truths.
Teaching slaves to read often carried a death sentence.
