Welp. Here's my report:
I left April 20 to meet up with my travel buddy in Costa Rica. It was lush, beautiful and fun. Hot. They are very big on ecotourism there. We went to three national parks. I loved the boat rides through canals and across lakes, seeing birds bugs crocodiles monkeys sloths it was all pretty amazing. While we were there a volcano was erupting.
Then we left the tropics for autumn in Sydney (via Dallas-Fort Worth since everyone asks how we got there from Costa Rica), a very walkable city that reminded me a lot of SF only better, with its beautiful harbor, bridges, ferries, museums, parks, beaches and really nice people. A day tour to the mountains included a trip to the surprisingly cool zoo that had roaming kangaroos and very large skinks! Had a beautiful nighttime ferry ride back to the city.
After a week, we flew to New Zealand's South Island which is even more awesome than its repute, ranging from pretty and charming to stunningly beautiful everywhere you look. Somehow the moon was full for three or four nights and we could still see the Milky Way brighter than I ever have. We camped in a van by rivers, lakes, glaciers and beaches for 11 days. Then we flew to the North Island to visit my friend's friends in Wellington for another ten days. Wellington is another very lovely walkable harbor city. We spent a weekend at our host's family beach house, and we took a long boat ride to tour a native wildlife sanctuary island where the birds sang symphonies. Long before the end of the three weeks in NZ, though, I was pretty worn out, sad over some stressful personal relations, and dreading return to the U.S. Though Trumpism has infected them, and they still have a long way to go with their racial and economic problems, New Zealand and even Australia seemed heartbreakingly sane in comparison with this country.
Six weeks away felt much longer. Saw and learned a lot, and lots of big feelings about it all. I'm still in recovery from the trip and re-entry to life here. I think I want to move to New Zealand.
We dipped into the Pacific Ocean on two continents and three New Zealand islands, also the Caribbean and Tasman Seas. Made it back to the beach in SF last weekend and that finally felt like home. Thanks for covering for me.
