Most of the media coverage will probably focus on the 12 month inflation rate as of August: 2.9 percent. But if you look at the month to month figures, this morning’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report offers a very simple political message:
Price increases were subdued this year until Trump’s tariffs were announced in April and implemented in May. Since then, inflation is coming back more strongly.
That’s the whole message. Democrats, please don’t get fiddled around with nuance. Prices are rising again. That’s our message. Prices were pretty stable in the first 5 months of the year. Even rent increases were running a little lower. Since tariffs, prices are rising more rapidly again. Thanks Trump.
That is all.
