This is one more of those situations which shows the institutional weakness and political incompetence of the Democratic Party, as I see no meaningful political pushback to the Charlie Kirk propaganda from the Republicans. Instead of seizing the narrative, they seem to be sitting like potted plants making “measured”, “respectable” statements, yet again trying to be the adults in the room.
For example, the initial response from the Democratic side was that we should find the shooter first before jumping to conclusions, which is of course the sensible, rational position to take. However, in the current public discourse, that came across as admitting that the shooter might be from the Left after all.
Instead, why not say the truth out loud, that the right wing has created a culture and mindset where guns are supposed to be solution of first resort, and that is unacceptable in a civilized society. As it seems, the actual shooter grew up in that culture and the only way he could think of countering hate was to go and shoot Charlie Kirk, which is absolutely the wrong way to go about it.
We are seeing a lot of pushback from common people to this propaganda (and many are losing their jobs), but why isn’t there a public pushback from Democratic leadership? They seem to be more adept at legislative maneuvering and congressional hearings than at going out and convincing the public of their ideas.
So in that vein, I propose that Democrats introduce the Charlie Kirk Gun Control Act, or at least an amendment to the spending bill in his honor, and make the Republicans vote against it.
Please call your representative in Congress and ask them to sponsor or support such legislation — in a participatory democracy, I feel that is one of the key ways common people like us can get their voice heard, through those we elect to represent us.
