The war is not going well for Russia. For some time now it has increasingly become obvious that Ukraine has so depleted Russia’s war machine that pretty much all that’s left is human wave “meat assaults”. It has gotten so bad that on the Lyman-Siversk line, Russia is now reduced to purely infantry assaults. Whatever armor they have, including APCs, have been converted into in-place “hidden artillery” :
Russia's Lyman assault becomes grinding onslaught of manpower — Ukraine's 60th Brigade
According to the head of communications for the 60th Separate Mechanized Brigade, the Russian army on the Lyman front has almost completely stopped using mechanized assaults.
“Recently, our troops destroyed a tank found in concealed positions. The enemy has stopped using vehicles for movement and instead employs them as artillery. For example, they can position a vehicle, fire, and immediately hide. It is therefore very important for us to destroy this type of mechanized equipment when the Russians conceal it in shelters,”

So in the face of such diminished capacities what is a proper former “World’s number 2 army” to do? I believe the recent cashiering of General Aleksandr Lapin out of the Russian Army, ostensibly for his “many failures” will not be an isolated case. It is a tell of what is coming. Things are getting to the point where there’s going to be a massive circular firing squad of finger pointing and a lot of folks in the Russian top brass who have been painting “pretty” pictures of the Russian effort in Ukraine to Putin will soon find their heads rolling. Similarly the recent spate of Russian drone and aircraft intrusions into NATO air space, is not without a purpose.
Putin is hoping to elicit a military response from NATO in order to construct a potential narrative based on a scenario where he can go to the Russian people and claim that because of the ‘failures” of generals like Lapin and the open aggressive moves from NATO, “Mother Russia” needs all her patriotic sons and daughters to rally to the flag and go fight in Ukraine. It is not as far fetched a scenario as one might think.
News today that the Russian military is calling for such a national mobilization and that the Kremlin is busy gauging the level of public support for such a move:

What seemed for a time as an endless reservoir of willing mobiki from the outer provinces of the Russian Federation like Yakutia, Bashkortostan, Tuva and others, has slowly dried up. Even the North Koreans are now seemingly unwilling to send the thousands of soldiers they had promised. Why would they after seeing what the Ukrainians(and the Colombians) have been doing to their soldiers in Kursk and Sumy?. Did Kim Jong Un actually cry after seeing all those coffins coming back to Pyongyang from Russia?:

Furthermore the increasingly over-stretched Russian treasury is no longer able to pay king’s ransom type bounties in order to entice new recruits. How then can one see mothers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Tver, etc., clamoring for their sons and daughters to be sent to fertilize the sunflower fields of Eastern Ukraine?.
On the eve of the events of February 24th, 2022 did anyone in the world think things would come to such a pass? But amazingly ADAPTIVE INDOMITABLE UKRAINE has pushed Russia to that point. Call it culmination, call it le dénouement, we are seeing the beginnings of a massive failure of the Putinist misadventure in Ukraine. As Krasnov, the most undiscerning observer of global currents said of his Russian paymasters in his splenetic speech at the UN today:
"They failed… I thought ending the war in Ukraine would be the easiest thing to do because of my relationship with Putin. Everyone thought Russia would win in three days, but they didn't. It makes Russia look bad. It should have taken a few days.”
