Off-year, special elections for state senate seats in Georgia don’t usually move the excitement dial. However, today, in Georgia Senate District 21, (with 95+% of the vote in) Democratic candidate Debra Shigley is losing the seat by 27%. This margin is good news for people who believe in America as a free and democratic country.
Why is this good news — especially as the Republican has already been declared the winner? In the regular election just shy of a year ago, the Republican won by over 40%. Shigley is on track to taken 13% out of that margin. Imagine that change in the vote nationally.
In more good news for Democrats, GA Senate 21 is not an outlier. Today’s result continues a positive electoral streak for the Democrats. The party has narrowed GOP margins in bright red congressional seats. Won what were supposed to be tight elections. Flipped previously GOP seats. And widened margins in Democratic precincts.
The DNC may not be popular. But Democratic candidates have a message the voters want.
