‘Photograbear,’ taken in Svalbard in summer 2018, by Israeli wild-life advocacy photographer Roie Galitz shows a large male polar bear that chased Galitz away in order to take a peek through the lens ... and Galitz caught that on film too. Galitz particularly loves bears, which he says are super-intelligent, along with all the big mammals, many of which are apex predators. “We’ve seen all over the world that when you remove the apex predators or any keystone species from the environment, the entire ecosystem can collapse... Asked why people should care about the extinction of polar bears thousands of miles away, he answers that they are apex predators and keystone species — creatures that help define an entire ecosystem — and that if they are removed, the whole chain of life is affected.
