The Dropkick Murphys’ brand of Celtic/punk music is true to the band’s blue collar roots. Their hit, “Who’ll Stand With Us” is a prime example. Normally the white working class is Trump’s base yet their outspoken pro-Democratic, pro-Union activism hasn’t hurt their concert attendance. They keep playing to sold out crowds. All the band’s merch is also proudly made in the USA.
The Dropkick Murphys’ new release, “Citizen ICE,” takes a position against the pointless violence committed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Too dumb to be a cop, indeed.
If you have ever seen the Oscar winning film The Departed (2006) you have also heard the Murphys’ hit “I’m Shipping Up To Boston.” It sold well enough to earn the band a platinum record. True, the band plays a bunch of thugs in the song’s vid but the cops nab them in the end.
The band got their name from Dr. John “Dropkick” Murphy. The physician and former professional wrestler ran a Massachusetts addiction facility from 1941 to 1971. No connection. They just liked the sound.
