Seizing territory at gunpoint in the 21st Century is no joke. The U.S. did quite a lot of that since the Declaration was signed 250 years ago, putting the lie to the “exceptional country” claim. Snatching autonomous Greenland from its own people and from Denmark appears to be mighty unpopular worldwide except maybe for Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin, who would view the implosion of NATO with glee.
For the moment, Trump’s attempt to collect real countries like fake FIFA trophies and other people’s Nobels has been stymied. The hint of war drums has given way to Trump's brand of, call it anti-diplomacy. His infuriating, embarrassing threats of economic retaliation for nations that resist bullying by a greater power are pure vendetta.
Trump no doubt thinks Greenland is a lot bigger than the map below shows, but it would still give him bragging rights for seizing the single largest patch of land of any president ever. As you can see, even the grab of 60% of Mexico in a hyped-up war took less.
Greenland superimposed.
Where Trump’s obsession ultimately goes is anybody’s guess, and I am not going to predict, because our Outlaw Prez is a lunatic on a downward spiral.
Here’s the Marsh Family doing what they do with the news. Thanks, we needed that!
