Finally received the results from my Maisie’s DNA test from Embark! Wow, what a wonderful mix. The DNA reveal shows that she is 52% Golden Retriever, 32% Siberian Husky, and almost 16% German Shepherd.
I am thrilled. At 15 months now, she remains at around 42 pounds, and I’m hoping she wo n’t gain much more. She’s put on about six pounds since she came to me as a foster late November.
The coloring is the husky in her and the temperament is the retriever. She’s sweet, loves people and dogs. Only problems are her separation anxiety and her finicky behavior when it comes to her bathroom idiosyncrocies. I have to admit that I’ve been recalcitrant when it comes to trying to train her but there’s also a stubbornness on her part. Each night I walk her up to the street for her last pee of the night, string cheese treats in my pocket and walk her to the same patch of grass, say “Go Potty” and praise the hell out of her when she does. Problem is she just doesn’t seem to get it. I’m wondering if I need a better treat. I just hate being out at night alone and she’s kind of all reved up, too, aware of the nightlife around us. It’s hard for her to relax.
I’m working with a trainer on the both the separation anxiety and the potty problems. I told her today that I really need more support because I’m just having such a hard time fofllfowing through on her suggestions and she’s going to come by late tomorrow and sit with Maisie while I leave for 20 minutes or so. Then we’ll try it again the following week. In between, I’m supposed to leave her for much shorter periods of time in her crate.
