Negotiators from the U.S., Ukraine and Russia are supposed to be meeting today in the UAE to discuss the latest peace initiatives that no one believes will lead to peace.
Russia hasn’t budged a centimeter off of its maximalist demands. Putin still wants all of Donbas, which includes the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, and says it’s non-negotiable.
x
❗️Ukraine may be offered to give up Donbas in exchange for $800 billion in financial aid from the West, according to Corriere della Sera.
▪️ At the meeting of the negotiating groups, 4 documents are expected to be presented, which are supposed to form the basis of a peace agreement.

2/ ▪️ One of the documents concerns the complete withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Donbas and includes a financing plan worth $800 billion for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
3/▪️ The second document envisages American security guarantees for Ukraine as well as the deployment of European troops on Ukrainian territory.
▪️ However, there is also a document concerning the sequence of steps: first and foremost, Ukraine must relinquish Donbas.
This should be interesting.

Power outages and lack of heating were also recorded in part of Severomorsk, where the main base of the Northern Fleet is located.

A Russian-occupied town in Luhansk is freezing, but it isn’t due to energy infrastructure being bombed.
x
1/ While Kyiv freezes under Russian bombardment, on the other side of the front line an occupied Ukrainian city of 100,000 is also freezing – this time due to Russian corruption and neglect. Russian warbloggers say that the situation is catastrophic. ⬇️

2/ Inhabitants of Alchevsk in the Luhansk region – which has been under Russian occupation since 2014 – have been writing in desperation to anyone who will listen to plead for help with a disastrous heating situation which they say has been ongoing since October 2025.
3/ Warblogger Sergei Kolyasnikov says that he is receiving "dozens of ... letters. Day after day" describing the problems being faced by residents, who say they are still being charged for heating that they are not receiving from the city's central heating system.
4/ A resident writes:"The entire city is facing a huge heating problem. It's not even a problem—it's a major DISASTER. Residents are freezing in their apartments, and the entire city is constantly experiencing heating main breaks."
5/ "Crews can't fix the problems fast enough; the heating pipes aren't insulated or buried, so they're heating the streets while the emergency crew rushes to another emergency. And so it goes on and on.
6/ "In my apartment, it's 13-14 degrees Celsius, and in the other room, 11-12 degrees Celsius. We heat with electric heaters and gas. The voltage drops, and the wiring can't handle the overload. The situation is similar in schools—it's extremely cold.
7/ "Children wear outerwear to class, and lessons are 30 minutes long... Of the three new [central heating] boilers installed last year, all three have already failed and are no longer usable."The Russian-installed authorities are doing little to help:
8/ "We've contacted Housing Office 10 several times... they just write it down in a notebook and say they have one plumber and he can't handle the whole workload. The Alchevsk administration still says it's not within their jurisdiction."

Drones rule the skies.
The first-class passengers get parachutes.
This is the third Russian aircraft in a day to experience an in-flight malfunction. On the morning of January 23, a Boeing 737 flying from Kaliningrad to Moscow made an emergency landing at Sheremetyevo Airport due to a landing gear problem. No passengers were injured. Specialists began a technical inspection of the aircraft, which was grounded for the duration of the investigation.
Not just trebuchets, but catapults and siege towers too.
This analyst sees doom and gloom for Russia. Let’s hope he is correct.

RUSSIA REACHES AN INFLECTION POINT
Russia has reached a point where it can no longer afford to recruit the numbers of men it needs. The days of 30,000 a month lured by high bonus contracts and the pretence of high pay are gone. The regional governments, many facing bankruptcy are barely getting by.
— The Analyst (@militaryanalyst.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 12:52 AM
They can’t afford the bonus payments at the very point potential signees want more than the now lower or near nonexistent figures on offer. Changing the conscription model to monthly rather than six-monthly can massage the figures but those troops are used only in rear areas, though they do free up some to move to the combat zone. Prisoners no longer sign up. Everyone has heard what happens when you do. Bakhmut is etched into many minds. Tales of it and the losses involved are legendary. Russia has only mobilisation to rely on. It has called up reservists but by all accounts many are paying their way out of going. If they had wanted to they would have - and they don’t want to.
Now with Ukraine on a policy of maximum killing and the potential for even higher casualties? The war stands to see even more in 2026, and the reality is without full mobilisation Russia is in numerical decline.
The Russians are focusing on mobility - trying to provide ATV’s and off road motorbikes and some small vehicles. They’re trying to be more flexible. They’re attempting to use Ai to make up for the lack of the non-commissioned officers they refused to implement back in 2012, despite Putin trying to insist on the reforms. They’re also trying to improve their drone systems command across the front in an attempt to counter the clear edge Ukraine has. But it seems like it might be too little too late.
When you spend so much time looking at this war day in day out, reading the reports, watching video, hours of it on end. You know that things have more than changed. It’s very different now. The overall war has shifted to parity and nothing Russia can do is changing it back. Day by day, increment by increment, it’s drifting to Ukraine militarily. Economically Russia is doomed and it’s time running out as reality bites. Ukraine despite its problems is not about to face economic collapse. It has friends - Russia only fleeting unreliable acquaintances.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.
WARNING: Video shows Russian soldier being abused.
Let’s check in on the Russian economy.

BANK FAILS IN RUSSIA
New Moscow Bank, Russias 258th largest company, had its licence revoked by the Central Bank after it failed to pay out depositors and suffered a debt repayment crisis from its customers. That’s two down this year. Just the tip of the iceberg.
