"We have imposed energy policies on ourselves that are impoverishing our people," explained Rubio, denouncing a "world without borders" that threatens "the cohesion of our societies," while defending himself against any xenophobia or "hatred" towards foreigners. Trump's United States, he said, is fighting a fierce battle against the supposed decline of the West. "While we are prepared, if necessary, to do this alone, it is our preference and it is our hope to do this together with you, our friends here in Europe," he proclaimed from Munich.
"We are part of one civilization, Western civilization," Rubio continued, launching into a hagiography of European civilization which produced "geniuses" such as Mozart, Dante and even the Beatles. "We care deeply about your future and ours," he asserted, because "we are connected, not just economically, not just militarily, we are connected spiritually and we are connected culturally."
A year after Vance openly interfered in European politics to allow reactionary ideas to flourish, Rubio proposed that Europeans and Americans work together to "build a new Western century." The transatlantic alliance is not destined to disappear, but to transform itself to fit Trumpist ideology. "Europe must survive," he said, arguing that the transatlantic link should not be limited to dependence on security and trade. Europe, he explains, must be strong and close its borders to end its supposed decline. "We do not want our allies to be shackled by guilt and shame" insisted Rubio, who advocated rebuilding an alliance that is not "paralyzed by fear" in the face of those who want to destroy this civilization.
This twaddle is just a warmed-up version of J.D. Vance's comments last year.
